Education Failed Me, Why AI Can Fix It

In the early '90s, a single phone call from my first-grade teacher to my mother marked the beginning of a challenging educational journey. This call was about my unique way of writing—everything was mirrored and upside down, an issue that hinted at a deeper learning challenge that impacts me still to this day. It took years and the insight of a teacher who shared her own dyslexia journey to start turning the tide. This experience isn't unique to me; it's a powerful example of the need for personalized learning approaches, an area where AI is set to make significant contributions and open up doors that until now were closed shut.

Today, the landscape for identifying and supporting diverse learning needs is far more advanced. However, the journey toward truly personalized education continues. AI offers a the most promising path forward we have ever seen. Imagine an AI-powered learning environment that adapts to the individual styles and needs of each student. These technologies can tailor lessons, incorporate effective learning strategies like spaced repetition updated every year with new information, and provide targeted support, making learning more accurate, accessible and engaging for everyone. Below are a few impactful ways that AI can help students of all kinds:

Spaced Repetition: This involves revising material over increasing intervals to improve long-term memory retention, making use of AI to customize review schedules based on the learner's performance.

Active Recall: Encourages students to retrieve information from memory, strengthening learning and memory retention, with AI pinpointing the areas that need reinforcement.

Interleaved Practice: Mixes different topics or subjects within a single study session to improve learning and problem-solving skills, with AI optimizing the mix based on the learner's progress and challenges.

Personalized Learning Paths: AI creates custom learning journeys for each student, adapting in real-time to their evolving needs and preferences, ensuring the most effective and engaging learning experience.

The development of AI in education is about more than just customizing learning experiences; it's a window into how technology can fundamentally transform educational paradigms. AI has the potential to democratize education, offering personalized learning tools that could once only be dreamt of. From creating individualized engaging learning plans to providing real-time feedback and support, AI can address a wide range of educational needs and challenges.

Looking ahead, the possibilities are virtually limitless. AI's ability to provide personalized, accessible education holds the promise of transforming learning experiences worldwide. However, realizing this potential requires careful consideration of the risks and challenges associated with AI, including issues of privacy, equity, and access.

The early challenges I faced due to dyslexia highlight small ways that AI can make a transformative impact to tailored educational approaches—a potential that AI is well-positioned to expand and enhance. Not only would I have been diagnosed much sooner but immediate strategies could have been suggested and tailored to my needs. I can’t say with certainty that my life would have ended up any different but it makes me wonder how AI will effect kids like me today. 

As we venture into this new era of education, my questions yet to be answered are: 

  • How can we leverage AI to not only improve learning outcomes but also to foster a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape for all kids? 
  • What steps can be taken to ensure AI in education promotes inclusivity and equity?
